The Berriasian-Valanginian boundary has been the focus of many disputes over the last 20 years. In order to clarify these controversies, new field work has been carried out on "classic′ sections in South-Eastern France. It has become clear that current ammonite zonal schemes must be modified. Two faunal turnovers have been recognized in the Late Berriasian and Early Valanginian and none of them corresponds to the Berriasian-Valanginian boundary as recommended by the IUGS. Therefore, we suggest that the position of this boundary should be changed.
