С 19 по 23 апреля в Словакии состоялось научное мероприятие, объединившее XII Юрскую конференцию и рабочую встречу берриасской рабочей группы Международной Стратиграфической Комиссии. В Словакии собрались вместе ученые из Болгарии, Великобритании, Италии, Китая, Польши, России, Словакии, Украины и Чехии. На конференции было представлено 34 устных и 8 стендовых докладов.

Встречи берриасской рабочей группы проводятся ежегодно, но нынешняя имела ключевое значение, потому что на ней впервые обсуждались потенциальные стратотипы нижней границы берриаса (GSSP, «золотого гвоздя»). Подошва берриасского яруса, являющаяся одновременно границей юрской и меловой систем, до сих пор не имеет «золотого гвоздя» в Международной стратиграфической шкале. Вместе с проблемой выбора GSSP обсуждался вопрос о маркерах границы юры и мела. Все участники рабочей группы единодушны в том, что в качестве таковых должны фигурировать, как палеонтологические, так и физико-химические признаки. Мнения разошлись по поводу приоритетности критериев, определяющих основание меловой системы. Наши зарубежные коллеги настаивают на первичной роли микрофаунистического признака (кальпионеллид). Российские специалисты считают, что и аммониты, и геомагнитные инверсии должны, наряду с кальпионеллами, фигурировать в качестве первичных признаков для определения нижней границы мела. Оживленную дискуссию вызвала также проблема выбора палеомагнитного маркера из двух претендентов на эту роль: основания магнитополярного хрона M19n или подошвы M18r. Среди кандидатов в стратотип нижней границы берриаса рассматривались разрезы пограничного интервала юры–мела на территории Испании, Франции, России, но ни один из них, к сожалению, не отвечает всем требованиям, предъявляемым к GSSP. По итогам обсуждения, председателем берриасской рабочей группой Биллом Уимблдоном (Великобритания) должны быть подготовлены предложения по выбору маркеров и «золотого гвоздя» границы юры и мела для их рассмотрения Международной Стратиграфической Комиссией.

Конференция и встреча рабочей группы проходили в старинном (XIV век) Смоленицком замке, примерно в 70 км к северо-востоку от Братиславы. В программу научных мероприятий входили две полевые геологические экскурсии по юрским отложениям Малых Карпат. К началу XII Юрской конференции и рабочей встречи берриасской рабочей группы МСК был выпущен сборник материалов конференции и путеводитель полевых экскурсий
